The 22nd edition of N3TC Drak Challenge Canoe Marathon will take place on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 January 2015, over 65km of the Upper Umzimkulu River from Castleburn Bridge to Early Mists Farm near Coleford.
The hugely popular event, which is a month before the Dusi Canoe Marathon, attracts around 1000 paddlers to Underberg eager to enjoy the clean river, technical challenges of the numerous steep alpine rapids and the breathtaking scenery of the Southern Drakensberg.
This year the event has been included on the International Canoe Federation’s Classic Series, which is made up of some of the world’s most popular river marathon races. Athletes now have a chance to earn points towards the overall standings from the Drak Challenge, which is the first event on the 2015 ICF World Series.
In tandem with the well supported canoe marathon, the Drak Descent MTB race will once again offer keen mountain bikers the opportunity to ride trails through the valley close to the river. This year the MTB race has been extended to offer a new route down the entire second stage of the race, from Swartberg Road bridge to the finish at Early Mists farm.
The N3TC Drak Challenge has snowballed in popularity in recent years and attracts large numbers of supporters and family members keen to enjoy the wide range of leisure pursuits and tourists attractions in the region.
Gameplan Media will be providing a full media service to the event consisting of a series of preview features highlighting key individuals and aspects of the race, and a daily event media service consisting of summarised results, full copy and high resolution photographs.
