500 visitors from all over South Africa and even Great Brittan visited Fairview farm in the heart of the Karoo all sharing the same goal, cycling 160km over 3 days in the Sneeuberg mountain range.
2017 saw two back-to-back mountain bike tours namely the FarmTrail Tour from 29 September – 1 October and the SheepTrail Tour from 3-5 October. Both tours consisted of the same routes and activities. Day one started with 100 purebred Arabian horses galloping past participants as an opening ceremony followed by a 21km night ride into the Karoo sunset. Thanks to Extreme Lights lighting the way through the night with their nifty bicycle lights. Riders were welcomed back by delicious spitbraai and koeksisters for desert.
Day two consisted of 65km from Fairview Farm to Nieu Bethesda. There’s also a shorter version, the Lormar Mini each day which start en route completing a total of 28km. Scott Sports surprised riders along the route providing them with Scott demo bicycles to test ride all the way to the finish! Some even got completely dressed from top to toe with Scott apparel, helmets, shoes, clothes the works! The Sport Club in Nieu Bethesda welcomed participants with prego steaks prepared and sponsored by Karan Beef. While filling the bellies, riders’ bikes received a complimentary bike wash provided by Q-Bike. The afternoon consisted of a “brew ride” to the local Two Goats Deli & Brewery where riders were treated to craft beer, cheese platters and live music as part of the package.
Day three headed back to Fairview Farm lead by McCarthy Audi Wonderboom Pre-Owned vehicles through the Sneeuberg Nature Reserve showcasing all kinds of wildlife from Springboks and Zebras to Blue Wildebeest. The toughest part of the route runs up to the first water point at 28km where riders were treated to ice cold water, Epieq Nutrition and off course the Lormar water point treat, koeksisters. Riders are also treated to ice cold beer at the last water point each day. Annette van der Merwe and her hardworking ladies welcomed riders with Curry mince vetkoek for lunch along with ice cold craft beer sponsored by Wild Clover Brewery. Participants that wanted to linger a little longer in the Karoo enjoyed a tractor sunset ride during the afternoon concluding an Ultimate Karoo Experience!
The Lormar Endurance MTB Tour’s main goal is to create awareness of the spectacular Karoo, it’s people and to provide participants true “platteland” hospitality! The Tour benefits the local community in many ways. Some interesting statistics: 1600 koeksisters are made by Fransien Blaauw from Middelburg, 17 sheep are prepared on the spitbraai by Jacques van Zyl, 1000 bottles of water are bottled by Body Fuel Express, 900 eggs are prepared for breakfasts and 1200 cups of moerkoffie & condensemilk are treats throughout the day to name a few! Furthermore guest houses in the are are booked and the tour provides more than 2000 man-hours of work to the local community.
A special thank you to everyone involved starting with the van der Merwe & Gouws families to all our sponsors: Scott Sports, McCarthy Audi Wonderboom Pre-Owned, Karan Beef, Q-Bike Lube, Extreme Lights & Epieq Nutrition.
