Bestmed Cycle4Cansa Championship

CYCLE 4 CANSA NEW SLIDE 2018

The 21st edition of the Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Championship will see the largest field for the past 15 years line up for the annual weekend cycling festival at Sun City at the end of the month.

The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA is presented by Optimum Financial Services and hosted by Sun City on 25 and 26 August 2018. The MTB Championship takes place on Saturday 25 August 2018 and the Road Championship on Sunday 26 August 2018.

Entries for the event close as soon as the 2018 entry cap of 5500 riders has been reached.

According to event organiser, Mauritz Meyer, the increased demand for entries has been brought about by the 21st birthday celebration coupled with the fact that the event has moved away from the weekend on which the annual Marikana Memorial Service takes place.

“The event takes place a weekend later this year which means cyclists will have a hassle-free travel experience to and from the event without having to plan detour routes to Sun City,” said Meyer.

“Many cyclists opted to rather stay away last year for fear of intimidation and violence on route to Sun City. It was a tumultuous time in the country’s political landscape and there were major disruptions to the road network around Sun City.

“In the current economic climate, we are humbled and thankful that so many cyclists are making trip to Sun City to support the event,” said Meyer.

According to Meyer entries are currently streaming in and riders who intend to take part are advised to visit the website soonest to make sure they don’t miss out – www.cansalostcity.co.za

The Road Classic offers distances of 103km and 70km and takes place on Sunday, 26 August. The MTB Classic, which presents 25km and 50km route options, fills the Saturday slot (25 August) over the weekend cycling festival.

The road race route is fast and flat and has become very popular since the return to the traditional route in 2016.

The Bestmed Cycle4CANSA Road Championship is a premier seeding event for the Cape Town Cycle Tour and proceeds from the event go to the Cancer Association of South Africa.

The casino resort offers convenient and safe parking as well as a variety of family entertainment options once the racing is done, including free entry into the Valley of Waves.
