XTERRA Trail Run returns to Nelson Mandela Bay

Calling all trail running, outdoor and fitness enthusiasts!  The XTERRA Trail Run will return to Kings Beach (Nelson Mandela Bay) on Sunday, 12 February 2017.

Incorporating the trail run routes of SA’s premier off-road triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA, entrants can choose between an action-packed 12km and/or 6km route.

Alexia Loizou claimed gold in the women’s race at the inaugural 12km XTERRA Trail Run in Nelson Mandela Bay in 2016.  “It’s great that XTERRA is now being hosted in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Loizou.  “I entered the XTERRA Trail Run as my road back to XTERRA.  The race was lovely.”  

Siyabonga Kahla was the athlete to beat in the men’s 6km XTERRA Trail Run in Nelson Mandela Bay.  “Myuyisi Gcogco and I decided to take part in the XTERRA Trail Run,” said Kahla.  “We run for Free Spirit Adventures.  Myuyisi came first in the 12km race.   The 6km route was well marked.  I really enjoyed the race.” 

2017 EVENT DATES:  XTERRA Trail Run Nelson Mandela Bay (Port Elizabeth)

	Entry Fee:  R180
	Description:  This route will start and finish with a beautiful beach run.  Happy Valley’s trail variety is sure to impress.  Expect some tarred sections, but mostly hard-packed single and jeep tracks with some sandy sections.  Entrants will do two laps in Happy Valley.
	
	Distance:  6km 
	Entry Fee:  R120
	Description:  This route is the same as the 12km route, but entrants will only do one lap.

AfricanX honours entrants

Trail runners taking part in the 9th annual Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS the weekend of 17 – 19 March 2017 are encouraged to send through their nominations for the event’s cherished ‘Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award’.  Introduced in 2010, one year after the AfricanX’s inception, the award was founded in memory of Sanet Wentzel, an AfricanX participant who passed away tragically at the end of 2009 after being knocked down by a car during a morning training run.  In 2016 the ‘Sanet Wentzel Spirit Award’ was presented to Stella Smit, an AfricanX runner from Paarl who had undergone open brain surgery to remove a cancerous tumour. Badenhorst, Scheffer claim XTERRA Trail Run victories in Buffelspoort

Altus Badenhorst and Leilani Scheffer set the course ablaze in Buffelspoort on Sunday, 22 January 2017 completing the 12km XTERRA Trail Run in 52 minutes 34 seconds and 01 hour 34 seconds respectively. Last chance for Cell C AfricanX Trailrun pre-race tips

The third and final Cell C AfricanX Training Run will start at 07:00 at Pipe Track (Cape Town) this coming Saturday, 21 January 2017.  The AfricanX Training Run is free of charge and open to all trail runners that are able to run at least 15km on the road.  This will make the training run more enjoyable. Trail runners preparing for the 2017 Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS can get a taste of what to expect from the event by attending the AfricanX training run in Stellenbosch on Friday, 16 December 2016.
According to Dawid Visser, ASICS FrontRunner, the Stellenbosch trails offer different variances in terrain.  “Runners will get a good idea of what to expect at the AfricanX.  The route will be mostly jeep and single track.  The weather is sure to be warm, while the trails will be dusty.
