Celebrating its 8th anniversary this coming weekend, South Africa’s premier three day stage trail run, the Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS will treat runners to exciting route enhancements including a new Stage Three start venue at the majestic Wildekrans Wine Estate.

“We are excited to welcome Wildekrans Wine Estate as the start venue of the third and final stage of the 2016 Cell C AfricanX Trailrun,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports. “Each year we strive to offer runners a unique trail running experience. The trails at Wildekrans are beautiful and smooth. Runners can look forward to experiencing a fresh new route. Stages One and Two will also hold some new surprises.”

Event Information:

Teams of two (male/female/mixed) will battle it out on a route that that varies in distance between 22km – 36km per stage. The three routes have been planned in such a way that the participants will have the opportunity to tackle a different breath-taking scenic route each day, allowing them to enjoy the full beauty of the Overberg.

Stage One: Friday, 11 March 2016

Start Time: 08:00
Start Venue: Houw Hoek Inn
Finish Venue: Houw Hoek Inn
Distance &Ascent: 36km / 900m
Water Points: WP1 / 8km
  WP2 / 15km ~ Paul Cluver Wine Estate, also a spectator point
  WP3 / 22.6km ~ Thandi Wine Estate, also a spectator point
  WP4 / 29.5km

Terrain: Non-technical easy running terrain with a lot of single track. No major climbs, but a lot of ups and downs.

Advise: Being a fairly easy day, runners tend to start too fast. Do not underestimate Stage One’s distance.

Stage Two: Saturday, 12 March 2016

Start Time: 08:00
Start Venue: Ongegund (Somerset West)
Finish Venue: Paul Cluver Amphitheatre (Elgin, Grabouw)
Distance & Ascent: 34km / 1100m

WP 2 / 19km ~ Grabouw Country Club, the only spectator point on the day
  WP 3 / 24.5km
  WP 4 / 29.5km

Terrain: The terrain varies from Gantouw Pass which is a steep, fairly technical climb, followed by sweeping single track before the loose rocky narrow hiking trail at the foot of the Groenlandberg. From the last water point the route is mostly downhill on open roads.

Advise: Don’t overdo it up Gantouw Pass. Save the legs for the second half, the hiking trail is the most technical section of the day.

Stage Three: Sunday, 13 March 2016

Start Time: 08:00
Start Venue: Wildekrans Wine Estate
Finish Venue: Houw Hoek Inn
Distance & Ascent: 22km / 800m

  WP 2 / 13km
  WP 3 / 18km

Terrain: The first half is easy running single track with open road links leading to the hiking trail next to Kat Pass.

Advise: Stage Three is all about enjoyment. Remember the major climbs are on the second half of the stage.

The 2016 Cell C AfricanX Trailrun presented by ASICS has attracted the attention of a star-studded field of trail runners including: Ben Brimble and AJ Calitz, Johnny Young and Nicholas Rupanga, Edwin Sesipi and Givemore Mudzinganyama, Nic de Beer and Devon Yanko, Pieter Calitz and Chad Gordon, Rohan Kennedy and JC Visser, Landie Greyling and Megan Mackenzie, Carla Van Huyssteen and Natia Van Heerden, Chantel Nienaber and Katya Soggot, Michelle Ronne and Ann Ashworth and Leilani Scheffer running with Dawid Visser.

“I enjoy the challenge of running as part of a team, becoming in sync with my running partner,” says ASICS Promotions and Training Specialist, Dawid Visser. “Communication is extremely important. You need to know how your partner is feeling. Motivate each other and have fun. Being competitive by nature, both Leilani and I will want to go for the podium, but we will take each stage as it comes.”

Henno Havenga will make his AfricanX debut by teaming up with trail champion, Johardt van Heerden. “I’ve heard a lot of good things about AfricanX,” says Havenga. “For me, running with Johardt will be a good introduction to high level trail running. I’m looking forward to meeting new people. Hopefully we’ll win the overall event.”

XTERRA star Carla Van Huyssteen and Natia Van Heerden will toe the line in the women’s team category. “AfricanX is one of my favourite events,” says Van Huyssteen. “The routes, race venue and setting are awesome. Natia and I have good all-round strength, a bit of speed, a bit of endurance and just enough spirit. I am looking forward to being out on the trails, leaving the world behind me for the weekend.”
