Challenge Yourself to Conquer the Attakwas Trail

Entries for the 2016 Attakwas Trail, which takes place on 17 December and should prove to be the must do trail run of the festive season, open on 6 May 2016.

Launched in 2015 the Attakwas Trail is a rugged trail run which explores a region time forgot. It features untouched landscapes, an echoing kloof which tugs at the essence of your South African soul and signs of our intrepid ancestors who once used the Attakwaskloof to traverse from the interior to the coast with the fruits of their labour.

The 29km Attakwas Trail Extreme route is a test of any trail runner’s endurance, in the mould of Dryland Event Management’s famous Fairview Attakwas Extreme Mountain Bike Challenge. It climbs to the summit overlooking the Attakwaskloof, which lends its auspicious name to the race, passing signs of historical struggles with and in those mountains – the route follows old wagon trails, past long decayed discarded oxen yokes and a hill-top fort. While for those who know where to look the signs of pre-European human influence also mark the landscape. In the Attakwaskloof the majestic scenery and the brief pause at the 32Gi stocked water point will ease the difficult passage along ever changing technical terrain. Expect rocky tracks, river crossings and fynbos marshes to challenge your fitness and skill. Once out of the Attakwaskloof a stunning view of the Indian Ocean awaits along with an exclusive descent of the Grootkloof towards the finish at Bonniedale Holiday Farm near Mossel Bay.

The 7.5km Attakwas Trail Mini route might be less daunting but it’s no less of a scenic trail experience. The route peaks with a view into the Attakwaskloof from the southern side before joining the Extreme trail runners in the descent through the Grootkloof back towards the Attakwas Mini start and finish at Bonniedale.

For families and friends of varying degrees of trail running prowess the two distances offer the perfect opportunity to experience a day out in the mountains before the festive overindulgences really take hold. Though with Dryland’s famously well-stocked water points the overindulgence might just start during the Attakwas Trail…
