A beautiful morning at Midmar Dam greeted the 600 athletes, with no rain insight after constant rain the previous week. The cooler water temperature ensured that wetsuits were used for both events, while the competitors took on the 600m and 1.9km swim courses. 350 athletes in the Sprint race scrambled for the front, with Rory Kaletsch exiting the water first and lead the sprint race right to the finish line. Grant Guerin clinched second just ahead of Guy Watchurst. Geraldine Von Flintal had a strong race and finished 5th overall to win the ladies Sprint race, 4minutes ahead of second placed Katherine Van Den Berg.
Gerhard Debruin and Kirsten Schut claimed the men’s and ladies overall honours at the 10th Midlands Ultra on Sunday. Debruin had to work hard to keep his lead from a strong chase pack of Dean Hoff, Mark Sach and Gavin Mofsowitz. Schut had a strong bike and powered ahead on the 3 lap 21km running leg, to claim gold 11min ahead of second placed Teneal Featherby and 3rd placed Corinne Berg.
The KZN Midlands lived up to its weather reputation, with a beautiful cool morning with very little wind greeting the athletes and spectators. Temperatures then climbed to reached 28deg at 1pm before the rain clouds came over and the inevitable downpour came down as prize giving started, cooling the exhausted athletes. The event now moves to Sun City on the 10th of May, which promises to be one of the most exciting events on the 2015 triathlon calendar.
