The curtains of the Nissan TrailSeeker Gauteng Series closed in Cullinan today, a quaint miners’ village about a 30-minute drive east of Pretoria.
With many of the seasoned campaigners racing elsewhere and taking their season’s break, the gauntlet was thrown open for new talent to step up and podium at the esteemed event.
It was Declan Sidey who raised his hand as the man to beat and snatched up the men’s elite title. The Kavuki Investment’s athlete entered the event in fourth on the series standings, and after walking away from Cullinan victorious stands a good chance of ending the Nissan TrailSeeker Gauteng series on the podium:
“I felt the pressure, but I knew I had to make today work. To win a race on this level is a really big deal, and it has encouraged me to keep believing in myself and what I can achieve next season ” said an excited Sidey.
Sidey narrowly escaped the determined Shaun-Nick Bester, who finished less than a minute behind him, and Jan Monshioa, who stepped onto the Nissan TrailSekker podium for the first time in his career.
The women’s elite category saw Johandri Leicester cross the finish line first; a maiden Nissan TrailSeeker for the rider this season. She was followed by Monica Glover and Cindy Porobich.
As the popular series ends on a high, Porobich concludes, “This is definitely one of my favourite mountain bike series, the routes never fail to surprise me. To have achieved a podium in the Nissan TrailSeeker is something special.”
