The 2018 Fedhealth IMPI Challenge #2 in Durban boasts an impressive combined prize purse of R43 000 with the Men’s and Women’s Elite Race winners guaranteed a whopping R10 000 each on Saturday, 16 June 2018.
Armin Botha (Potchefstroom) obliterated the Elite Men’s field in an impressive time of 02 hours 49 seconds at his very first Fedhealth IMPI Elite Race #1 at Coetzenburg (Stellenbosch) in April this year.
“It’s fantastic when sponsors and organisers come together to offer elite athletes such an incredible prize,” says Botha. “I aspire to compete as a professional athlete and train full time. Events like the Fedhealth IMPI Elite Race make it possible to pursue that dream. It’s such an awesome journey, but as an elite athlete there are certain expenses that we need to cover to be able to perform at our best, this includes physio sessions, sport massages and dietary supplements to mention just a few. A prize purse makes it possible to cover these expenses and allows us to focus on the next big event.”
Dominique DOliveira (Bellville, Western Cape) claimed gold in the women’sFedhealth IMPI Elite Race #1 in a deserving time of 03 hours 05 minutes 57 seconds.
“The Prize Purse in the Fedhealth IMPI Elite Race definitely helps to attract athletes from around the country,” confirms DOliveira. “Most elites would probably not enter if the winnings didn’t at least cover their costs, but of course there’s always a risk because that podium spot is never guaranteed. Most of us don’t earn a living from the sport, yet we sacrifice loads of our time and money to be the best that we can be. Even though we take part in Obstacle Course Races because we love it, a decent prize purse is a nice additional incentive that may push us to be better at what we do.”
