The 31st edition of the event, which will see beginners to professionals taking part in the exciting road and mountain bike challenges. The road races will be taking place at Hobbie Beach in Port Elizabeth and the Mountain bike events at the Addo Polo Club.
The Herald VW Cycle Tour is one of the highlights on PE’s annual sporting calendar and attracts thousands of cyclists all over South Africa. This year’s road racers can however expect something a little different, with organisers deciding to give the route a slight tweak.
The popular event has been sponsored by Volkswagen for the past 12 years. VW Group SA General Manager Communications Matt Genrich said ‘’ the beauty of this event is that it caters for both road and off – road enthusiasts, so there is a race for everyone. And for the slightly mad, maybe a race on both days.’’
Our road race directors Brad Jackson (Mountain bike) and Julie Briggs (Road race) are once again dedicated to keeping the riders happy throughout the weekend and have a team of volunteers who will help ensure that both races run smoothly.
Last year’s 106km men’s road race winner Nolan Hoffman is confident that he will return to defend his title this year and is looking forward to the event. ‘’ I fell in love with this event. It is one of the nicer coastal races and the standard of organising is world class, I enjoyed the route. Its challenging in some places, but it’s doable.’’
There will also be a wealth of prizes worth over R500 00 up for grabs, out of town riders need not worry as we will be able to offer great discounted deals on flights and accommodation thanks to our partners Mango airlines and the Citi Lodge Hotel Group.
