Knysna Cycle Tour is this weekend!

Knysna Oyster Festival MTB event - low res 3

Knysna Rotary is ready for this weekend’s Momentum Weekend Argus Knysna Cycle Tour, the opening sports event of the 2016 Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival and one of the biggest events of the 10-day celebration.

“A year of preparation has brought us to this moment,” says Race Director Elwin Thompson. “And we are ready to welcome nearly 6,000 cyclists and their families to Knysna this weekend.

“We are very excited that this year we are 10% up on entries and also have more development riders than ever before. At last count it was approximately 100 young riders with about half of these coming Cape Town and the rest from the Knysna area.”

Here are a few pointers for cyclists competing in the race and residents and holidaymakers in Knysna, regarding the closure of roads this weekend.

On Saturday from 05:30 to approx. 0930, and on Sunday from 05:30 to approx. 11:30, the following roads will be closed to traffic:

Trotter Street to the corner of Hedge Street; Hedge Street from Trotter to Waterfront Drive; Gordon Street from Hedge to Gray Street; and Remembrance Avenue. Waterfront Drive between the N2 and Hedge Street will be closed until 15:00.

In addition, on Sunday the Karatara Road will be closed to traffic from 09:00 to 10:00 for the peloton. Once this group has passed, the flow of cars will be monitored by marshals and Traffic Police to ensure one-way only traffic up to Karatara from 10:00 to 13:00.

“We would like to thank all residents and visitors in the Knysna area in advance for their patience this weekend and ask them to exercise caution while our cyclists are on the roads,” said Thompson.

For the convenience of all cyclists participating in this weekend’s events, here are the times for registration and prize-giving, which will be held at the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival Grounds in Waterfront Drive:
