After 30mins & 3laps of intense racing, Olympic Gold Medalist & World Champion Jaroslav Kulhavy won the 2015 Aramex songo.info Champions Race to the boisterous and excited cheers of the local kids and adults.
It was the first time in four years that co-founder of songo.info Christoph Sauser did not win the race in Kayamandi but the result had little sway on the crowds affection for Sauser who he was quickly surrounded by a mass of kids, all wanting to be close to their hero. The route that the race follows is extremely unique. Residents of the township can sit on their front steps and watch the worlds best go past. It is not only the kids from the songo.info programme that get excited when it is time for this crazy and unique race, as described by Sauser but the broader Kayamandi, Stellenbosch and Cape Town community that embrace this event as a highlight on the local events calendar.
Kulhavy will be teaming up with Sauser, riding for Investec-songo-Specialized at the 2015 Absa Cape Epic which starts on 15th March. “It is great to have won the songo.info Aramex Champions Race in the Kayamandi township! It is a nice race and good training before the Prologue of Absa Cape Epic on Sunday,” said Kulhavy, who along with some 50 mountain bikers took to the streets of Kayamandi.
All along the route – that included the songo.info BMX track and going through the alleys between houses and ducking a washing line or two – spectators lined up to give a shout-out to their favourite riders.
World Champions Annika Langvad won the women’s race. “Super cool race at the Aramex Champions Race in Kayamandi. Spectacular course through the township is for sure something that I’ll take home as a great memory.
It was awesome to take the victory. My Cape Epic partner Ariane (Kleinhans) was dangerously strong but sadly lost her chain while we were in the lead. Legs and minds are ready for the Absa Cape Epic.”
In addition to the Mens & Ladies race the Future Champs race was well supported where the younger generation of riders got to race in front of Mountain Biking legends. Ian Lategan and Jessi Nixon won the boys and girls race. They were followed in 2nd place by songo.info riders Baphelele Mbobo and Nophiwe Hala.
