The organizers of the Western Cape’s premier open water swim together with Speedo proudly welcomed thirty-two members of the Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club to the 3rd annual Sanlam Cape Mile on Sunday, 19 February 2017.
“Speedo has a longstanding relationship with the Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club,” says Deidre Scodeller, Brand President Speedo South Africa. “We strive to assist the club where possible. In addition to receiving complimentary entries, each Phoenix Club member was also seen proudly wearing the Speedo brand. It was really heartwarming to see the swimmers united as a team. We are happy to be able to give back both to the community and to the sport.”
The Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club was established in October 2009 to continue the work and the legacy of the late William Eric Harley who dedicated his life to ‘Learn to Swim’ and water safety.
According to Joyce Blows, Phoenix Open Water Swimming Club, Speedo has been a valuable asset to the community. “Many of our children, due to poor socio-economic circumstances, have never owned proper swimming attire such as caps, swimming costumes, goggles, towels or equipment such as kicker boards or noodles. Speedo also introduced us to the organizers of the Sanlam Cape Mile, an event that has for the past three years exposed our young swimmers to the experience of open water swimming while in a safe, controlled and fun environment. Our children now work towards the goal of one day competing in this prestigious event. It is seen as an adventure to forge camaraderie and fond memories in the world of swimming. We are truly thankful both to Speedo and the Sanlam Cape Mile for turning a dream into a reality.”
Celebrating its 3rd anniversary in 2017, the Sanlam Cape Mile took place in the pristine waters of the Eikenhof Dam at the Grabouw Country Club. Entrants could choose between an exhilarating 1 mile (1.6km) and a refreshing 500m swim.
In the Elite Men’s Race, Olympian Chad Ho (Durban) pipped Chip Peterson (United States) to the finish in a lightning fast time of 17 minutes 48 seconds. Ashley Twichell of the United States’ finishing time of 18 minutes 19 seconds secured her the top spot on the podium in the Elite Women’s Race and an overall 5th place on the day.
