The 2015 edition of the popular Spur Gauteng Winter Trail Series™ kicked off with a record number of entrants as almost 1200 people crossed the finish line at B’Sorah tented camp this Sunday. Add to that superb weather and a super fun atmosphere and it was a spectacular start to the Series.
The long course Championship saw runners tackle a fast and winding 13.5km route and had the likes of Edwin Sesipi and Michael Bailey on the start line to ensure the pace would be kept seriously honest. Sesipi pipped Bailey by a matter of seconds, both men dipping under the previous record time, coming home a shade over 49 minutes. Third over the line in the men’s race went to Jason Bennima, clocking 55:32.
In the ladies long course Championship race, Lerentia Strydom took top honours winning in a time of 01:01:41, with young Robyn Kaltenbrunn claiming second over the line in 01:03:14 and Takalani Ndandani taking the final overall spot with a time of 01:03:41.
No stopping the Schlebusch’s
In the men’s 6.7km short course Challenge race, the Schlebusch’s picked up where they left off in the summer edition at the end of last year with mom, dad and son all winning their category.
Luke Schlebusch claimed the overall win in a terrific time of 25:04, with fellow 17-year-old, Anrich Zimmerman hot on his heels in second place with a time of 25:16. Ryan Mathaba took the last spot on the overall podium with a super time of 26:27.
In the ladies race, it was race favourite Adél Terblanche who stormed her way to top spot winning in a time of 29:07. New face, Ndiu MP crossed the line second overall in a time of 30:47 and another podium regular, Zoe Brentano sealed her podium spot in 31:19.
It was a fantastic start to what promises to be another epic instalment of the Spur Trail Series™ on the Highveld. A big thank you to our sponsors Spur Steak Ranches, BOS Ice Tea, Protea Hotels and Graham Beck Wines for their loyal support.
