Red Cherry Adventures, an Eastern Cape Adventure company recently staged a fun Road Race called the Red Cherry 200 between Forever Resorts near Plett and finishing up 2 days later at the Grass Roof restaurant in Port Elizabeth.
Stage races are normally the property of MTB events so this was something new and with a total distance of 240km was met with some trepidation but attracted just over 30 adventurous road racers. The incentive of not only an awesome route but JT racing hoodies and an awesome Merrell goody bag was too much to resist.
The 1st day saw this group with police escort tackle the long climb out of Plett and onto the R102 with the awesome passes of Natures Valley and Bloukrans. It was a rainy day and the passes proved a challenge ..not just the tricky descents , but also the long climbs . After 152 km, some great waterholes and a good old SW wind the riders arrived at the constructed race village in Humansdorp. Each rider was allocated a comfy 3 man tent , great grub , free drinks and some great sounds from resident musician ,Jono.
The next days start would take the peloton through J-bay and onto 2 big climbs, namely Gamtoos and Van Stadens and down to the coast and the Iron Man route of Maitlands with the finish line at Grass Roof in seaview. The Finishers shirts with the words “I klapped it” said it all.
Red Cherry will relook at dates for 2016 but expect this event to grow at a massive rate as the inaugural event met with rave reviews from riders and sponsors alike
