Western Cape – Elite swimmers Myles Brown, Chad Ho and Danie Marais will face-up for the third time in Grabouw when they take on the Sanlam Cape Mile at the majestic Eikenhof Dam (Grabouw Country Club) on Sunday, 19 February 2017.

All three swimmers boast with Sanlam Cape Mile podium finishes both in 2015 and 2016, with Marais and Brown claiming gold respectively.

Myles Brown had the crowd on their feet in 2016 when he broke the SA record in the 400m Freestyle at the Olympics. “The Cape Mile keeps getting better and better,” says Brown. “It is an awesome day and an even better race. The location and the family fun make the event iconic. Chad and Danie are two of the best open water swimmers, not only in the country but in the world. It’s great to race against them. It’s always very tactical and challenging, but that just adds to the excitement of the event. I am hoping to defend my title this year. It’s always better coming away with gold in a sprint finish than with silver.”

Considered one of the fastest professional open water swimmers in the world, Chad Ho has yet to claim the top spot on the podium at the Sanlam Cape Mile. “It’s incredible to see how the sport has grown,” says Ho. “There was a stage when most people did not know open water swimming existed. Seeing more and more people getting involved makes me feel proud of what I do. It’s always enjoyable to have competition. It keeps you on top of your game. You never know what is going to happen on the day.”

Danie Marais claimed gold at the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile in 2015. “I would definitely recommend the Cape Mile to friends and fellow swimmers,” says Marais. “The vibe is great and the event gets bigger and bigger with each year. Winning in 2015 was the best feeling ever.   I plan to focus on my own race, do my best and go for gold.”

The Sanlam Cape Mile scoreboard currently stands at:

2016

1.     Myles Brown
2.     Chad Ho
3.     Danie Marais

2015
