Capetonian to participate in this year’s Paris Marathon

Cape Town, 23 March 2017 – Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, together with Sanlam and ASICS, has announced the winner of the 2017 all-expenses paid trip to this year’s Paris Marathon. Aaron Adams, 21 and hailing from Cape Town, will set off for Paris this April to take part in one of the world’s leading races.

Having first discovered his passion for running in 2010, and after many years of track and field, Adams chose last year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon as his debut marathon.

“Participating in last year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was a phenomenal experience,” says Adams. Whilst his race may not have gone exactly to plan, he is determined to participate again this year. “I experienced quite a bit of pain and cramping and there were several moments during the race when I questioned why I signed up. But, ultimately, it was worth every single moment of discomfort. To be able to cross that finish line left me with a feeling and sense of accomplishment I will never forget.”

Says Yegs Ramiah, Chief Executive of Sanlam Brand, “We believe the sport of running is easily accessible and by its very nature requires determination, dedication and the belief that a lot can come from very little. Just like wealth creation, a craft that we as a company are more familiar with, the sport of running is a journey without an end, the joy and value of which are unqualified. Aaron’s experience proves just that and we wish him everything of the best for the Paris Marathon”

As a member of The Century City Athletics team, Adams goes on to express his appreciation for the incredible support and encouragement he receives from everyone involved, without which the thought of entering last year’s event would have felt far too daunting.

A decision that has clearly yielded great return, seeing Adams not only complete last year’s race but similarly winning the competition to participate in this year’s Paris event, together with his best friend.

Says Sarah Mundy, Marketing Manager of ASICS South Africa, “ASICS South Africa would like to congratulate Aaron on winning the entry to the Paris Marathon. As one of the leading brands in running, we are excited to be able to provide a local South African runner with the opportunity to experience a top international road race, also sponsored by ASICS.”

“The opportunity to travel overseas and visit Paris is something I could never have imagined, not even in my wildest dreams,” says Adams. “My sincerest thanks to both Sanlam and ASICS for this incredible opportunity. I can honestly say, ‘dare to dream because dreams do come true’. Thank you.”

And as for this year’s Sanlam Cape Town Marathon? “I’ll definitely be back,” says Adams. “It was such a well organised event, showcasing the heart and soul of the beautiful Mother City. I have no doubt that the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon can easily compete with the world’s top international races.”

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon team is proud to be associated with Sanlam and ASICS in this exciting initiative of making runners dreams a reality.

Managed by a joint partnership through Western Province Athletics (WPA), ASEM Running and the City of Cape Town, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, to be held in September, is endorsed by Elana Meyer and Francois Pienaar.

The four-day festival starts with the AIMS Africa Conference and the opening day of the Expo on September 14, and will come to a close with the road running contests over various distances on September 17.

It offers a competitive yet beautiful route, providing runners with a unique experience that highlights the city’s natural splendour and top cultural attractions.
