Durban – Xoli Madida is relishing the opportunity to challenge for a record third consecutive women’s 18km trail running title at this year’s STIHL Sharks Trail Adventure when she takes to the trails of Summerveld Estate, Shongweni on Sunday, 6 December.
The passionate athlete has dominated proceedings in the ladies tussle of the event’s longest trail races having edged out the likes of Pat Dammann, Natasha Papini and Daneil Feldmann and is keen to put in another strong showing.
“I have already entered for this year’s race, I will do my best and if I win then I will be very happy!” explained Madida.
“If someone comes and they are better than me then well done to them but it would be nice to win my third title!” she added.
With mountain biking and trail running events as well as live entertainment and an exclusive Sunday staging of the renowned Shongweni Farmers and Craft Market, the event is a memorable one for everyone.
“I really enjoy that race,” said Madida. “It is very well organized and the course is really beautiful!”
“I love the hills and the trails and especially the fresh air of the countryside!”
Hailing from Newcastle, Madida has to endure a lengthy journey to compete at the event, adding to her will to succeed annually.
“I stay far away so that is extra motivation for me to win.
“The race is also always close to my birthday, which is on the 8th of December, and so winning the race is like my birthday present to myself!”
Despite going into this year’s clash full of confidence after her back to back victories in 2013 and 2014, Madida will need to put in another strong showing if she is to overcome a field that is set to feature Hillcrest local Dammann – who has two thirds and a second place at the event to her name already – as well as Highway resident Zoe Papadakis.
“My friend – who is also a good runner – told me that she will also be running at this race, but I will just concentrate on running my race!” a focused and determined Madida explained.
