The Sophiatown Majorettes Club will celebrate its hat trick performance at the FNB Joburg 10K CITYRUN on Tuesday 24 September 2019 (National Heritage Day).
Established in Westbury in 2015, the Sophiatown Majorettes Club is a registered NPCthat aims to restore the sport of majorettes in township communities.
“Our program however goes beyond the barriers of training the skills of majoretting,” says Leanne King-Alexander, Head Coach Sophiatown Majorettes Club. “We also equip our members with life skills. Participating in this sport requires dedication, commitment, discipline, self-respect and respect for others, comraderyamongst members, love, trust and loyalty towards each other. At present our team comprises of twenty majorette members, two dedicated officials and two parent volunteers who assist with preparing the team for competitions and performances.”
“We are excited to be invited to perform this year. It means that we did something right,” says King-Alexander. “Some of our girls have never left the township. Being exposed to this event and going to the city is a fantastic opportunity for them, one that they are very excited about. They thoroughly enjoy the day. The girls feel like celebrities when the runners stop to take photographs. In addition to giving the girls the opportunity to showcase their talent, the event also encourages them to continue with the sport. Being part of such a significant event gives them a sense of belonging. Runners can look forward to synchronized choreography, energy and passion with a burst of colour. We are hoping to evoke some nostalgia from participants who were either majorettes back in the day or “drummie” moms and dads at some point in their lives.”
