What will you be doing in three months from now? You could be whooping your way through pristine Knysna forest singletrack in the 2016 Garden Route 300 or GR Lite, from the 26th to the 28th of February 2016. Here’s why…
The Garden Route 300 is for many riders the last chance to get in some long, hard racing miles in their legs before the Cape Epic, but it’s far more than that too!
With sublime trails, which you can be sure will be even more exhilarating in 2016 given the addition of the Garden Route Trail Park as the start and finish venue for Day 2, through the lush indigenous forests of the Garden Route National Park and Harkerville forests the riding are a stand-alone lure to enter the GR300. Then you have the race venue in Knysna… A visit to Knysna hardly requires an excuse, so the non-riding members of your family won’t be putting up a fuss at the prospect of spending a long weekend at a mountain bike race with you. Plus, with no camping, porta-loos or shower queues the GR300 and GR Lite offer you the opportunity to do a mountain bike stage race in style. Book into a hotel or B&B for the weekend, enjoy your lunches and dinners in the race village at Quay Four, before heading back to your accommodation – well away from snoring fellow riders – for a good night’s sleep. (Okay there’s an option to camp too, but space is limited, so if you’re a seasoned camper you’ve got to book soon.)
At close on 250km in total riding distance for the GR300 and around 180km for the GR Lite, the event is the perfect carrot to aim for to keep you training (and in shape) over the festive season. Then, once you’re back into the full swing of the work year it’s a great break – at just the right time – to get you through the grind of January and February in the office.
Now that you’re sold on the idea of heading off to the Garden Route at the end of February to ride the Garden Route 300 or the GR Lite, what’s their left to do? Enter of course. Entry fees includes limited edition race kit, a registration bag, all meals at Quay 4, a braai at the Garden Route Trail Park on Saturday the 27th, a finisher’s gift and most importantly the best three days on your bike you’ll have in 2016. If you enter before the 31st of December you take advantage of the early bird rate of R4 480 per rider, while if you’re a little tardy and enter between the 1st of January and the 1st of February you pay R4 800 per rider. Entries are available online through www.gardenrouteevents.co.za website or you can click here to go straight to the entry portal.
