Stellenbosch based sports marketing agency, Stillwater Sports is taking the matter of water safety extremely serious in their preparation to host the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile.

“Although we are excited to host the inaugural Sanlam Cape Mile in February, with this fun event comes the serious matter of water safety,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director Stillwater Sports.  “This is one area where all the boxes need to be ticked as the safety of our entrants will always be our number one concern.  With this in mind we have commissioned the services of Jurie Wessels, a seasoned veteran in the field of water safety.  Together with the expertise of Jurie and his team of 80 trained professionals, we are confident that the Sanlam Cape Mile will be a well-organized, safe mass swim that is ideal of the whole family”.

Through his involvement with numerous events including the Totalsports Challenge, Totalsports XTERRA and the National Life Saving Championships, Jurie Wessels understands the complexities of hosting a mass swim.

“Water safety is absolutely essential when hosting an event such as the Sanlam Cape Mile,” says Wessels.  “We will have 80 trained lifeguards on duty on the day with various water rescue craft including paddle boards, skis and four IRB’s.  All our lifeguards hold the internationally recognized Lifeguard Award, as issued by Lifesaving South Africa”.

“There will also be a number of rescue swimmers with Torpedo Buoys on the water,” continues Wessels.  “The Lifeguards will wear distinctive red and yellow colored clothing and will be situated around the entire course.  We would like each entrant to rest assured knowing that all safety measures are in place.  All that they need to do is focus on having fun”.  Wessels and his team will be assisted by Derrick Frazer of Big Bay Events, Ian Anderson of WP Aquatics and Hanlie Ochse of Lifesaving Western Cape.
