Western Cape – Reigning Sanlam Cape Mile women’s champion, Michelle Weber will face strong competition from Ashley Wall of the United States on Sunday, 19 February 2017 when they take on the Western Cape’s premier open water swim at the majestic Grabouw Country Club.
“The Sanlam Cape Mile is one of my favorite open water events,” says Weber. “It’s spectacular with live commentating, a live band, a bar and lots of food stands. The crowds of swimmers also add a fun element. The venue is beautiful, while the event is extremely well organized and ideal for families and friends.”
“I love seeing the large community of open water swimmers that come together in the Western Cape to compete in this annual event,” continues Weber. “It’s great to see more and more athletes getting away from the city and taking part in open water events. My goal will be the same as with every other event: I want to enjoy the day, the race and the company of other athletes.”
According to Open Water World Championship medalist, Ashley Wall, South Africa’s beauty blew her away on her first visit. “The country is breathtakingly beautiful, and the people are so welcoming and kind. I am constantly being told that I need to experience Cape Town. I am so grateful to finally have this opportunity. I love taking part in new open water races, and have heard nothing but good things about the Sanlam Cape Mile. I am looking forward to meeting new people and of course I am excited to race.”
Wall will be accompanied by her husband Derek, training partner Chip Peterson and Open Water Swimming Ambassador and Social Marketing Director, Lexie Kelly. All four swimmers competed in this past weekend’s aQuelle Midmar Mile.
“I’ve always heard great things about the Sanlam Cape Mile from other open water swimmers like Chad Ho,” says Kelly. “It’s been one event that I’ve really wanted to do. I love swimming in new bodies of water and the Eikenhof Dam looks absolutely beautiful. The event looks so prestigious with all of the components from safety and organization to scenery and conditions. I’m really excited about it.”
Celebrating its 3rd anniversary in 2017, entrants can choose between an exhilarating 1 mile (1.6km) and a refreshing 500m swim.
