Taking place at the picturesque Eikenhof Dam in Grabouw on Sunday, 19 February 2017 the Sanlam Cape Mile has attracted the attention of a number of South Africa’s leading triathletes including the likes of Bradley Weiss, Stuart Marais and Vicky van der Merwe.

According to Marais, the Sanlam Cape Mile is really special. “There are only a few open water swimming events in the Western Cape. This one is organised by Stillwater Sports and it is great. The vibe is amazing, the event is family orientated and the setting is really special. The Grabouw Country Club is a beautiful venue. Entrants can look forward to swimming in dark mountain water while being surrounded by mountains.”

Reigning Fedhealth XTERRA SA Champion Bradley Weiss has entered the Sanlam Cape Mile in preparation for the XTERRA SA Championship. “The Sanlam Cape Mile is a good warm up to XTERRA. As athletes the majority of our swim training is done in swimming pools. This sometimes inhibits our ability to swim well in open water. Having the opportunity to race an open water event on the same course as the XTERRA, which is the following weekend, is a big advantage. My goal is to gain some feel for the venue and the water ahead of XTERRA Grabouw.”

According to Michael Lord, the Eikenhof Dam offers the most beautiful open water swimming. “My goal on event day will be to beat the triathletes. The elite swimmers are way too fast.”

“The Sanlam Cape Mile caters for all levels of athletes,” says Vicky van der Merwe. “Beginners can do the shorter distance. It’s also exciting as triathletes get to race open water swim specialists. The event will form part of my training on the day. I will also go for a run and a ride afterwards.   My goal for the event will be to have a solid swim.”
