This time of the year the Cape shows its best weather and greenest views, and Slanghoek Valley offers the best of both! On 11th of October, Iqela Events hosts the Slanghoek Mountain Bike Classic. You have the choice of a long and a short race, and both start and finish at the Slanghoek Wine Cellar near Rawsonville.
Apart from great scenery, you are guaranteed a few other goodies as well: a bottle of wine, a pair of branded socks and a chance to beat a Springbok rugby player. Marius Joubert will be doing the 32 Km event, so imagine your moment of gloat when you pass him en route to the finish line. The best news of all is that one lucky winner stands the chance of winning a KTM bike worth R26000!
The long race presents you with 55 kilometers and 887 meters of climbing. The other thing is that this course does not pretend to be the most technical course out there. Now the real manne might be quick to say: “Jaaslaaik, if I does not climb at least 2000 meters and does 6 drop-offs of at least a meter high, it’s not a real mountain bike race!”. We get that point, but the good news is, a race is as hard you make your bike go. The racing snakes will be gunning it flat out, and 2:30 should be a respectable winning time. Don’t lose their wheels. It is as easy as that. Check out the handy route and profile below to figure out where you are going to attack. Fastest man wins.
The short version of the Slanghoek Mountain Bike Classic is for those who are honest on various levels. Firstly, pain does not purify the soul that much. So let’s be honest and finish before it gets too painful. Secondly, why cycle 55 kilometers for a bottle of wine if you can get it after 32 kilometers? Actually, that has nothing to do with honesty. That’s just, with all honesty and respect, plain stupid. And also as mentioned, only the 32 Km race gives you the opportunity to beat Marius Joubert, but that would be mean. Attack him on the rugby field if you are a real man, or woman. Once again, check out the 33 Km course and profile below. The fastest guy should collect his wine and socks in about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
For those building towards a pro career in cycling, this race, being a fast one, should also boost your SAS seeding. Even more reason to go flat out! See you next weekend.
Online entries close on October 7th, but for R20 extra, late entries can be done on the day. Visit www.iqela-events.co.za for more info.
